Lost & Found
For this 3-week project, I was briefed to create an object that was “lost or found”. When I think of lost & found objects, I think of objects that are significant, personal, mysterious, or unusual.
I decided to design something that doesn’t exist- making it an object that is lost from existence but found in its creation and imagination. I treated this as a speculative design project, imagining something that does not exist as we know it, but unavoidably building it on ideas that exist in our world.

I explored the idea of “alien” objects- things that do not exist in our world as we know it. I drew upon my imagination to conceptualise textures and shapes and explored them 3-dimensionally using mixed media such as liquid latex and needles as well as processes such as burning and cutting metal. Using materials and textures that I extracted from this process, I started to design alien objects, leaning towards wombs and eggs.

I materialised an “alien womb” using a paper structure internally and created an external structure using textured metals which I cut into organic, blood vessel inspired shapes, forming a segmented appearance. I then used ink dyed liquid latex and undyed liquid latex to create imagery of melting and formation of flesh-like material. I finished the object with wire umbilical cords and protruding needles on the edges as a protective adaptation. The object is balanced on a frame made of tree branches to show a juxtaposition between this alien object and from nature on Earth.
